Recommended Reading List
From time to time, the bishops of the Diocese of Albany make recommendations for reading. Among the current list are the following:
- Acts of the Holy Spirit, A Complete Commentary on the Book of Acts, by Dr. C. Peter Wagner, published by GospelLight.
- The Albany Episcopalian, a periodical for all members of the Diocese of Albany.
- Becoming a Contagious Christian by Bill Hybels and Mark Mittelberg, published by Zondervan.
- The Bible; most parish lectionary books use either the Revised Standard Version or the more common New Revised Standard Version of the Bible for worship services, and many people like to read the New International Version or the Contemporary English Version. Bishop Dan recommends the English Standard Version.
- The Bible Speaks Today, a Bible commentary series from InterVarsity Press.The general editor is John Stott. This series is recommended by Bp.Dan and by Bp. Harold Miller of the United Diocese of Down and Dromore in the Church of Ireland. Among the volumes is: The Message of Matthew,by Michael Green.
- The Book of Common Prayer, especially to read The Daily Office, daily.
- The Celtic Way of Evangelism by George G. Hunter, III,published by Abingdon; or alternately, How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe, by Thomas Cahill, published by Doubleday.
- Christian Theology, by Alister McGrath, 3rd edition,2001, published by Blackwell (Oxford, and Malden, MA).
- Contemporary Office Book: The Daily Office: Rite Two with lessons in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, published by Church Hymnal Corporation (now is Church Publishing).
- The Creed: What Christians Believe and Why It Matters,by Luke Timothy Johnson, published by Doubleday.
- The Daily Office Book, published by Church Hymnal Corporation(now is Church Publishing),it is a boxed set of two volumes: year one and year two, and it comes with lessons in the Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
- Evangelism for "Normal" People: Good News for Those Looking for a Fresh Approach by John Bowen, published by Augsburg Fortress.
- The First and the Last: The Claim of Jesus Christ and the Claims of Other Religious Traditions, by George Sumner,published by Eerdmans.
- Jesus in Beijing: How Christianity is Transforming China and Changing the Global Balance of Power, by David Aikman,published by Regnery.
- Leading Life Changing Small Groups by Bill Donahue,published by Zondervan.
- Manual of Business Methods in Church Affairs, (CD ROM or book form) available from The Episcopal Church Center. The Diocesan Treasurer may be able to provide more specific information. This is a must for any parish treasurer.
- The Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity by Philip Jenkins (Oxford University Press)
- On the Road Again: Managing Evangelism and Stewardship for the Kingdom by Canon Keith Brown (Church Publishing Incorporated)
- Prayer Shield: How to Intercede for Pastors, Christian Leaders and Others on the Spiritual Frontlines by C. Peter Wagner,published by Regal Books.
- The Purpose Driven Church by Rick Warren, published by Zondervan
- Reclaiming the Great Commission, A Practical Model for Transforming Denominations and Congregations, by Bishop Claude E. Payne and Hamilton Beazley, published by Jossey-Bass. There is an accompanying study guide [PDF] written by Bishop David Bena, and it is available through the diocesan web site. The book and the study guide are highly recommended, not only for individuals, but also for groups such as parish vestries.
- Spiritual Transformation: Disciples Making Disciples by The Rev. Joseph Byrne. There is a three volume set, available from the diocesan office.
- Your Faith: Memorial, Memory, or Miracle? by the Rt. Rev. David J. Bena. Published by Forward Movement. There is also a study guide to go with it, sold separately.
