February 16th, 2005

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Last night the initial 2005 Diocesan Lenten Service of Healing was held at St Stephen's, Delmar with a filled Church. Nigel Mumford gave a very fine sermon. The music ministry was outstanding. The line for Reconciliation was long. The Prayer Teams were busy and the sense of the Lord's presence was evident. Thank you to Fr Darius for organizing the whole evening, and for the lovely supper by volunteers for the clergy beforehand.

Next week the Service will be at Christ Church, Cooperstown, at 7pm (Feb 22).

Tomorrow, Thursday, Feb 17, volunteers are welcome at the Spiritual Life Center to help stuff envelopes. Begin at Noon with pizza and work through the afternoon. Come and stay as little or long as you wish.

Friday and Saturday is the first meeting of the Deacons' Council with Bishop Dave and me at the SLC.

The Annual Anglican House of Studies (formerly SEAD) will relocate this year from Charleston, SC to the SLC, March 30 to April 2. This is an academic program involving lecturers from the U.K., Canada and the U.S. It makes a superior continuing education opportunity and is a good use of clergy study leave, and a welcome shift after Holy Week and Easter. Diocesan scholarship aid is available for priests and deacons. I encourage you to consider this. Albany clergy interested in scholarships contact Bishop Bena. Our diocesan coordinator is Father Bob Haskell. Fr Bill Cooper will serve as chaplain along with Fr John Barr of S.C.

The speakers and topics include:

The Very Rev'd Dr. Philip Turner: Christian Ethics: Dodo or Phoenix
The Rev'd Dr. Ephraim Radner: Leviticus: Sacrifice and the Character of the Church
The Rev'd Dr. Edith Humphrey: Singing Praises with Understanding--Biblical, Eccesial and Contemporary Questions for Authentic Christian Hymnody
The Rev'd Prof. Christopher Seitz: The Psalms in the History of Interpretation
Fr Nelson Lundberg is recovering at home from a recent illness.

Congratulations to Pastor Mary White who was honored earlier this week for her ministry to the family of the late Lt John Finn, Albany Police Department, and others in the community

Next week Carol and I will begin a vacation to mark our 40th Wedding Anniversary. During the trip we'll attend the consecration of the Venerable David Chillingworth as a bishop in the Scottish Episcopal Church, visit friends in Oxford, and preach at Downpatrick for Saint Patrick's Day. Back for the beginning of Holy Week.

The Great Vigil of Easter will be celebrated at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center on Easter morning at 5:00. All are welcome. Bring while stole and chasuable. The bishops will be baptizing. Clergy who wish to refer candidates for baptism should notufy Canon Jerry Carroll. The Vigil will begin in the Great Hall. The New Fire will be kindled on the Heliport, the Paschal Candle blessed and the procession moves to the Chapel for the Exsultet, Baptism and first Paschal Eucharist.

LORD JESUS, move every disciple in your church to genuine repentance and amendment of life; give us a thirst for You and a desire to be fruitful in your kingdom that we may keep your commandments with singleness of heart. Amen.

In Christ,
+ Dan
