Statement from Bishop Herzog On the Death of Pope John Paul
April 5th, 2005
We extend to Bishop Hubbard and fellow Christians of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany and of the world, our sincere sympathy on the death of Pope John Paul II. I ask all our churches to pray for him at the Liturgy this weekend.
The Holy Father has served as encouragement to the whole Christian world, and as witness to the human race especially in terms of the value and significance of human life, especially before birth and at the end. He has spoken for us all in support of justice, marriage and his commitment to Christian Unity and common cause in the service of the Gospel has served to call us all to evangelism. The Holy Fathers personal courage in the face of attack and indeed of attempted assassination, has reminded us of the cost of discipleship.
We join the Catholic community in committing the life and ministry of Pope John Paul to Our Lord Jesus Christ, whom he served so faithfully and fruitfully these many decades. Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord.
