St. Alcuin
May 20th, 2005
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
A latest addition to the array of Anglican luminaries brightening Convention 2005: The Harvest is Ready is the Right Rev'd. Michael Nazir-Ali, Bishop of Rochester in the U.K. Bishop Nazir-Ali is a Pakistani-born convert to the Christian faith and the first such person to head an English diocese. He was widely rumored to be among the finalists for Archbishop of Canterbury. He is a member of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Committee (ARCIC) and a member of the House of Lords. Bishop Nazir-Ali will be the Preacher for the Ordination Mass on Saturday, June 11, the feast of St Barnabas the Apostle. He is a gifted scholar and widely sought after speaker.
He will join Baroness Cox of Queensbury, Bishop Justin Badi of the Sudan, Archbishop Reginald Hollis (retired) of Montreal and Bishop Harold Miller of the Church of Ireland.
Workshops will number 65 and serve to strengthen and encourage the local church. Saturday's Convention Eucharist will include the Ordination to the diaconate of: Katherine Alonge-Coons; Donna Arnold; Lynne Crimi; Arthur Garno; Kevin Jones; Ross Kimball; Michael Logan; Nigel Mumford; Dawn Skramstad; Howard Thompson; and John Thorpe. Please pray for each of these ordinands. The Pre-Ordination Retreat will begin this Friday night at the SLC and end on Sunday.
As of this afternoon 925 individuals have already registered for the Convention.
Three of the pre-Convention meetings have been completed and the final one for the Susquehanna and Western Mohawk will be next week at Christ Church, Cooperstown on Tuesday, Mary 24 at 7:30pm. Tomorrow the Diocesan Council meeting begins with Morning Prayer at 9:30 at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center. Individuals interested in Holy Orders (priesthood and diaconate) are invited to meet with Bishop Dave and me from 3 - 4 pm also at the SLC.
Trinity Sunday morning Bishop Dave will be at Holy Spirit, Schenevus, and I'll be at Christ Church, Deposit.
The Healing Ministry Center and the Oratory of the Nativity of the Holy Child Jesus at the SLC will be dedicated on Trinity Sunday, May 22 at 5:00 pm with the Eucharist beginning in Christ the King Chapel. Clergy who are vesting should arrive by 4:30pm. White stoles. A reception will follow at the Great Hall. The Lord has powerfully touched many lives already and we give thanks to Him for this. If possible, I ask for such thanks to be offered on Sunday during the Prayers of the People at the Liturgy.
Sunday evening and Monday morning the Deacons' Council will meet with the Bishops.
Last Sunday Bp Dave marked Pentecost at Christ Church, Schenectady and I was at Christ Church, Duanesburgh. Both of us saw vibrant life and thinking toward the future.
The eve of Pentecost Deacon Laurie Garramone-Rohr oversaw an outstanding day with the Rev'd Steve Keyes, Crossroads Community Church, Greenville, South Carolina.
Wednesday the Retired Clergy and Spouses enjoyed a get together at the SLC for Mass and lunch. A tour of the New Beaver Cross rounded out the day. We are especially blessed in this diocese to have such a faithful cadre who continue to serve in many places. Lord, we ask you to continue to pour your love upon them and their continuing ministries. Amen.
Deacon Bob Heighten is bouncing back from his brief hospitalization and new stints. Please pray for his full recovery.
Father Rick Dennis will be celebrating and preaching as Rector of Saint Luke's, Saranac Lake this Sunday, for the last time. He and Connie will be retiring, though their residence will continue to be in SL. We ask God's choicest blessings on them as they enter into this next phase of their life and ministry.
The Eucharistic Holy Hour for June will be on the 7th at Noon at Christ the King Chapel at the SLC. Clergy, postulants and candidates who wish to stay for lunch should email Pat Hanley.
May Healing "Journey into Healing" at the SLC with the Rev'd Dr Russell Parker, advisor to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York for Healing Ministry, May 28th. 9am to 4pm. Fee is $39 and includes lunch. Teachings will be held in Christ the King Chapel; lunch in the Great Hall.
From the Healing Ministry at the SLC: Date change for The School of Healing Prayer Level 2. Originally scheduled for June 22-25 has been CHANGED TO: Sept. 11-14. Starting at 4:00pm on Sunday and concluding around 3:30pm on Wed. Applications are available at the Healing Ministry office.
In the English prayer book the Athanasian Creed is recited on Trinity Sunday, though this has never been the custom in the American Church. For devotional purposes, it can be found in the Book of Common Prayer on page 864. It is easy for folks to drift into a kind of unitarian thinking about God, especially with the secular pressure to see all religions alike. This is our distinguishing belief, and from it proceeds the Incarnation of the Son being both perfect God and perfect Man.
O holy and eternal Trinity: we worship and adore You as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We thank You for revealing Yourself in Trinity of Persons and unity of being; we thank You for the Incarnation of the Son and for drawing us by the Holy Spirit into Your unending life. Fill us with such gratitude that we may ever confess You and Triune God into Whose Name we are baptized and in Whom is our life and hope. Amen. O holy, blessed and glorious Trinity, one God: Have mercy upon us.
In Christ,
