Update from Bishop Dave:

Please be in prayer for the Herzog's. Mary, daughter of Bishop Dan and Carol, has been pregnant for four months. Last night her baby died in the womb. This is obviously a blow to Mary, her husband Jud, and to all the Herzog's. Bishop Dan and Carol are with Mary and Jud today. Please pray for them in their grief.

There are several important items to discuss with you today...

1. The first Parish Leadership Conference is this Saturday at Holy Family School in Malone. Directions at end of this email. It will be an outstanding day. Please make every effort to be there. Our featured speaker will be The Rev Tory Baucum, who did such a fine job as last year's speaker. We DO, however, have a problem.

We have just been informed that Tory has been nominated for Bishop Coadjutor of Albany! What's the problem with that? Well, with Tory being the principal speaker for four Parish Leadership Conferences over the next month, it could be perceived that he has a platform the other nominees do not have. So after consultation with Father Paul Hartt, President of the Standing Committee, we are changing the format of the Parish Leadership Conferences somewhat to "level the playing field." At each Parish Leadership Conference, we will have with us all nominees. They will be introduced and given time to speak about their nomination.

The places and dates?

This Saturday - Holy Family School, Malone - 9 am to 4 pm
Next Saturday (Jan. 28) - Hartwick College, Oneonta - 9 am to 4 pm
Friday, February 3 - Christ the King Center - 5:30 to 9:30 pm
Saturday, February 4 - Christ the King Center - 9 am to 4 pm

Please register soonest so that we know how much food to prepare. Go to the Diocesan Website - albanyepiscopaldiocese.org and hit the link for Conferences. Or call the diocesan office (518 465 4737) and speak with Jerry (ext. 208) or Maggie (ext. 308).

2. Prayers for the election of a Bishop Coadjutor... To all the clergy, please include the prayer "for the Election of a Bishop." on page 818 of the BCP at all services until March 24.

3. Regional Lenten Healing Services. This year we will again lead Regional Healing Services during Lent, with Father Nigel Mumford officiating with the bishops. Here are the dates & places:

Monday, March 13, 7 pm, Christ Church, Schenectady, for the Metropolitan & Hudson Valley Deaneries.
Tuesday, March 14, 7 pm, Christ the King Center, for the Upper Hudson and Southern Adirondack Deaneries.
Monday, March 20, 7 pm, St John's, Johnstown, for the Western Mohawk and Susquehanna Deaneries.
Tuesday, March 21, 7 pm, Trinity, Potsdam, for the Saint Lawrence and Northern Adirondack Deaneries.

Please advertise the services in your parish and community.

4. January Episcopal Visitations; Bishop Dan and I have been enjoying visiting parishioners around the diocese as we have been busy with parish visitations.

On January 8, Bishop Dan had a good visit at St. Andrew's, Scotia - lots of positive energy there; and I visited St. John's, Johnstown - what a magnificent choir!

On January 15, Bishop Dan was at St. George's, Clifton Park - lots of snow blowing outside, but a warm and encouraging congregation inside; and I visited St Boniface, Guilderland - confirmed five very fine young men, and again found an excellent choir.

This weekend we will be in the North Country, where Bishop Dan will visit St. Paul's, Waddington and I will visit St. Philip's, Norwood. We have also been busy with ordinations and institutions. Kathy Coons, Grace Church, Waterford, and Donna Arnold, Christ Church, Ballston Spa, were ordained, and Evette Austin will be ordained and instituted this Sunday afternoon at Grace Church, Canton. Mike Jones will be instituted at the same time at St. Eustace, Lake Placid.

5. And let's be in prayer for the mission team operating right now in Dominican Republic, and well as the team that will go there next month.

6. St. George's, Clifton Park has started a "Comfort For Those Who Mourn" group. This is a non-denominational Christian support group for those who are grieving the death of a loved one. The group meets Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. through February 16th. For more information, contact Deacon Lynne Curtis or Fr. John Hopkins at 371-6351.

So that's it for now. Let's continue to pray for one another, as we ought.
