April 6th, 2006

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In the Eastern churches, tomorrow (that is, the day before Palm Sunday) is celebrated as Lazarus Saturday, the final major work of Jesus provoking his death. In the Eastern churches, its significance is signaled by the return of the 'alleluia' to the liturgy. Reading St John's account of the raising of Lazarus is an excellent preparation for Holy Week.

Tomorrow is the planning meeting at Christ the King for Workshop Presenters at the June Convention.

A special day for Healing Prayer is set aside for Maundy Thursday at the Healing Center at Christ the King. Reservations can be made by calling 518-692-9550.

Mrs. Kathleen Smith, widow of Fr Russell Smith, died in February in her home in Texas. Mrs. Jean Carmichael, widow of Fr Ralph, died this past month. Her memorial service will be Sat, May 13 at 1pm at St Andrew's, Albany. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.

The Mass of the Chrism (Mon 6pm @ Cathedral; Tues 6pm @ Oneonta; Wed Noon @ Tupper Lake) is open to everyone. A meal will follow afterwards for clergy, postulants, candidates, spouses and clergy widows.

NEW YOUTH LEADER: Patti Gibbons has accepted appointment as Coordinator of Youth Ministry for the Diocese effective this month. Patti comes to this post with six years of parish experience, preceded by several years of youth work in ecumenical settings. Patti will continue the focus of assisting parishes in local youth ministry, and providing programs where young people can come when the local church lacks sufficient numbers.

This frees Chris Copeland to further develop the Beaver Cross Youth Camp which is already receiving more reservations following last summer's bonanza start up season with its many new resources.

As we prepare for Holy week, it is the time to set aside everything else. It's the week we can skip other activities to be with Christ Jesus and to enter into His passion and death, to experience resurrection. Support your parish clergy who have prepared liturgies and services this week to minister to your life. Bring your family with you. Dads: take your children with you for Good Friday; let them see your gratitude for Jesus' saving work.

Good Friday is a FAST DAY. There's spiritual power in fasting. And that's what the church needs most, spiritual power - from the source, the Triune God.

LORD JESUS, give us such love for You that we may cheerfully disregard every other claim on our schedule, and return this week to You day-by-day that we might enter in to Your saving action, and become more fully Your disciples. Amen.

In Christ Jesus
+ Dan
