Saint Augustine of Hippo, Theologian and Bishop
August 28th, 2006
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Christian Ed Conference Saturday was outstanding. Three cheers for the clergy and teachers who want to see their Sunday Schools (and parish) increase. Lots of resources, lots of enthusiasm and a firm commitment. Deacon Laurie and her Team did a superb job!
The Cursillo Community marked the 51st Weekend (for married couples) from Thursday through Sunday at Christ the King SLC. Congratulations to the Candidates and Team for a truly apostolic weekend. I was honored to give the talk on the Sacraments, to celebrate the joint Eucharist on Saturday, and to officiate at the closing. The Cursillo movement has brought much spiritual vitality to individuals, families, and parishes across the diocese. Ray Farrara has done a terrific job of fostering this work.
Please pray for Father (LtCol) Jeffrey Neuberger who has been deployed to Iraq for a year.
George Marshall is making a good recovery from eye surgery. Keep him in your prayers.
Please pray for the mother of the Rev'd Susan Bowman who is gravely ill, Belle Blount.
A general informational meeting for those interested in Holy Orders will be held on Sunday, September 10 at 2 pm in the Library of Christ the King Center. This is an opportunity to hear directly from the Bishops their expectations of those seeking Holy Orders, to hear more about ordination, and to turn in an Interest Form for the Bishops to read. Spouses are encouraged to attend to hear about expectations for their support. Please let those in your parish who would make a good priest or deacon know about this session. And, if someone will be coming, please contact Fr. Bob Haskell, Chair of the Commission on Ministry, at rhaskell2@nycap.rr.com
For any parish utilizing a motor coach service for transport to the Consecration Service, the motor coach carrier must have submit a NYS Security Form in advance. Please contact Carol Drummond at cdrummond@albanydiocese.org or 465-4737 for this form. This is for buses to discharge inside the Convention Center.
REPEAT of driving suggestion for Sept 16: There is a festival in Albany which may impede traffic flow downtown. For folks from out of town, go to Interstate 787 (along the Hudson River) and take the exit for "Empire Plaza". Continue toward the underpass and the entrance to the Convention Center Parking will be on your right. Cost is $2. All vehicle occupants must have photo I.D. (or they can be dropped off in front the of Center.)
Inquiries for the CHOIR for the 9/16 Consecration Mass can be sent to Dean Vang at mvang@nycap.rr.com.
For Parish Bulletins: The Consecration of Bishop-elect Bill Love will be Sept 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the New York State Convention center in downtown Albany. The Consecration Liturgy is open to ALL disciples in the Diocese. No admission ticket is required. Parking is available beneath the Convention Center for $2; all individual's in the car will need a picture ID. The Liturgy begins at pm, so attendees should arrive by 12:30.
Lord Jesus, revive your Church with a fresh breath of Pentecost; enable all your servants in this Diocese, laity, deacons, priests and bishops to enter more fully into discipleship and be transformed by your Holy Spirit. As you brought St Augustine to a conversion of life, so accomplish that same work in us. Amen.
In Christ,
+ Dan
From Fr Steve:
A driver was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the traffic light turned yellow just in front of him. The man did the right thing stopping at the crosswalk even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.
The tailgating woman hit the roof - and the horn - screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection.
As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands in the air. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.
After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.
He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car."
