Update from Bishop Dave
I hope you enjoyed preaching (and listening) to the Gospel lesson last Sunday, and the chance it gave us to recommit ourselves to the Institution of Marriage and family. This way of life is being torn in many directions these days, and we need to go back to the Word of God and the historic teachings of the Church - the principle of the undying love of Christ for His bride the Church, and how that principle pertains to Christian marriage.
Sunday found me doing a visitation at St. Timothy's, Westford. Westford is a little village of maybe a hundred souls, located north of Schenevus and west of Cobleskill. St. Timothy's has a simple but nice early 19th century building, and the pews still have doors on them. Over thirty hearty congregants came for enthusiastic worship. Father Irv and Dottie Ballert have been providing pastoral leadership there for about seven years, and have done a fine job of helping the people minister and grow. When I visited there in the year 2000, there were about six parishioners left and those six thought I was coming to close the church. They have done well preaching the Gospel in their everyday lives and inviting family and friends to join them for worship.
We have become aware that Father Bill Hinrichs' father, William, died last week. Please pray for the repose of his soul, and for comfort for the Hinrichs family.
Big Diocesan events this weekend: Men's Cursillo and Marriage Encounter. Pray for both retreat experiences and for the expectant people who attend.
