St. John, Apostle and Evangelist
December 27, 2007 – Diocesan Update Addendum
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Parish Leadership Conferences (PLCs)
We are honored to have the Reverend Jay Slocum as our conference leaders this year. He will be sharing with us practical church growth methods and tools. He hails from a small farming community in the Hudson Valley near Poughkeepsie. He responded to a call to become a church planter outside of Hilton Head Island, and saw God's hand move in incredible ways as he lead a new congregation to grow to an average attendance of more than 400 weekly in three years. In July of 2007, Jay responded to God's call to him and his family to begin a new church plant focused on postmoderns in the City of Pittsburgh. When Jay is not specifically working to bring others to the Gospel, he enjoys mountain biking, BMX extreme sports, studying and writing about pop culture, and spending time with his wife, Catherine, his two daughter, Emma (10) and Lydia (6) and their dog, Schaeffer.
Please register for any of the PLCs by going to the link on the Diocese’s home page at www.albanydiocese.org or going to the Event Calendar and clicking on the link for the particular date you want to attend. These links will be available by 8 PM December 27. Early registration helps with the planning of food services and handouts. Lunch and refreshments are provided. Margaret is a volunteer receptionist at the Diocese Offices and wife of Canon Bob Haskell, and her surgery was scheduled. Torre Bissell leads a Diocese Intercessory Prayer ministry and his surgery was an emergency to repair damage to his knee after falling.
Martha Fenty, mother of the late Deacon Maria Fenty, died Wednesday, December 26. She is survived by her husband, David. Condolences may be sent to Mr. Fenty at 602 Marcella Street, Endicott, NY 13760. Funeral arrangements are pending as this Diocesan Update Addendum goes out.
Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon her.
Almighty God, Father of all mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (BCP pg 505)
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Fenty has asked that donations be made to the Maria Fenty Fund. Please make checks payable to the Episcopal Diocese of Albany and show “Maria Fenty Fund” on the memo line of the check. The Maria Fenty Fund makes grants to various projects in Sudan in memory of Deacon Maria Fenty who died in February 2002 from complications with malaria contracted during her mission trip.
